As a Bruneian proverb goes, tak kenal maka tak cinta (one may not like what he doesn't know). Similarly, the Chinese would often say, "For friends, what is precious is mutual understanding." 太平洋岛国（Pacific island countries）指南太平洋地区完全由岛屿组成的一些国家，其中斐济（Fiji）、萨摩亚（Samoa）、巴布亚新几内亚（Papua New Guinea）、瓦努阿图（Vanuatu）、密克罗尼西亚联邦（Federated States of Micronesia）、库克群岛（Cook Islands）、汤加（the Kingdom of Tonga）和纽埃（Niue）等8个岛国与中国建立了外交关系。

这一条谚语的出处，汤加王国（the Kingdom of Tonga），位于太平洋西南部赤道附近，是由173个岛屿组成的岛国，其中36个有人居住，大部分为珊瑚岛。
